3 Simple Ways to be a Better Ally in the Workplace

Why Inclusivity Matters in 2022

Inclusivity is not a superfluous goal.  Inclusive workplaces provide more opportunity for hiring, for employee growth and workplace morale. Research is supporting that: the younger generation of workers today expect diversity, equality and inclusion at work. According to a study done by Great Place to Work, when a company invests in inclusivity, employee retention and ROI increase. Companies that invest in inclusivity are also twice as likely to exceed financial targets, heighten innovation and improve creativity. So, what can you do to be more inclusive? Here are 3 easy steps you can take to become a more inclusive workplace:

Adopt Gender Neutral Language

This may seem like a small gesture but it can have a large impact! For example, when someone reads through the employee benefits package or employee handbook and they don’t see their situation reflected, it can be discouraging. Being mindful of different situations can show employees you support that every family is different, and welcome! Feeling accepted is a fundamental human need -  updating language is an easy, yet meaningful change.

  • Ensure employee benefits packages or employee handbooks don’t make limiting assumptions about what a family looks like in 2022.

  • Remove references in job postings that limit who could apply  - try to rewrite sentences to be as open as possible.

  • Use inclusive language. Instead of “Ladies and gentlemen” state “Honourable attendees”, or “Distinguished guests”.

Put it in Writing

When starting a new position, one of the first things that is handed to new employees is the employee handbook. Some scan through it, some read every line, some just sign the bottom. This document sets the tone -  ensure that they understand the workplace culture and guidelines, and expectations.

What’s written matters, it shows what’s important! Within your anti-harassment and anti-discrimination policies consider adding these specific topics to make it as clear and concise as possible:

  • Gender identity

  • Gender expression

  • Sexual orientation

By listing these words along with an example of what that type of discrimination looks like, you have just become a more inclusive workplace! You have set a standard of what is expected from your employees' behaviour by stating it before it becomes an issue.

Be Mindful of Pronouns

Has someone ever called you the wrong name? Darryl instead of Darren? Julian instead of Jillian?  It’s a simple error, but can leave a terrible impression!  Pronouns are similar. The simple act of getting current employees to add pronouns to email signatures encourages  inclusivity. For new hires, include a section that offers preferred pronouns and layout the options (he/him, she/her, they/them). This will cost you nothing yet it makes your workplace more open and inviting.

That’s it, folks! You’ve identified 3 clear and easy steps that any employer can implement to create a more inclusive environment at the workplace. The more an employee feels welcomed and represented the more productive and loyal they will be. By using gender neutral language, mindful pronouns and updating policies you have just become a more diverse and inclusive company. Successful employers are using inclusivity as a fundamental part of growth in their companies.
